To Foster Change is PBS SoCal’s initiative to raise awareness around the systemic and personal challenges Los Angeles foster youth face and overcome every day, while providing opportunities for youth to take control of their own stories. The station partners with over 30 social service organizations to support and encourage caregivers, share positive stories, create a space to brainstorm new approaches to supporting youth, and train young adults in media arts.
“Engineer It, Girl!” is a two-fold project where the main focus is encouraging interest in STEM learning for young girls ages 4-6 and introducing them to women who are in field and have successful careers. The project consists of hosting workshops focused on different types of engineering for girls to be hands on with age-appropriate engineering experiences. The other half of the project includes ValleyPBS filming at each workshop to create 3-5 minute interstitials about girls creating engineering projects.
African Americans: The Las Vegas Experience allows viewers to discover the momentous events that defined the African American experience in Las Vegas throughout the Civil Rights era. These events altered the city’s history and changed thousands of lives. Our story introduces individuals who are connected to these events and to each other.
Chronic childhood trauma, or what experts call adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), can disrupt a child’s brain-building process. “Building Strong Brains: Tennessee ACEs Initiative” is a statewide effort to establish Tennessee as a national model for how a state can promote culture change in early childhood based on a philosophy that preventing and mitigating adverse childhood experiences, and their impact, is the most promising approach to helping Tennessee children lead productive, healthy lives and ensure the future prosperity of the state.
In celebration of this year’s 50th anniversary of the classic TV series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, we reached out to the local music community and had various performers pay tribute to the iconic Fred Rogers theme song “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
The 413Families community-based texting program for families with young children offers information about educational tips and fun things to do – most of it FREE. With the goal of sending 2-3 texts per week, organizations submit messages that inform and engage families about local events, asking parents to submit photos or respond to giveaway opportunities.
The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) produced an Emmy-winning documentary on the rise and fall of Little Rock, Arkansas’s successful yet segregated African-American business district (1940-50’s), using a historic building in the district known as the Dreamland Ballroom as a focal point. AETN has built dozens of community partnerships; held educational screenings, panels discussions, and workshops; and conducted riveting community dialogues on diversity and race relations throughout 2018 that will undoubtedly continue.
Make Room for Pie is a one-hour special produced for pledge featuring local food writer/historian Kat Robinson.
Positively Kansas, from KPTS Channel 8, takes viewers to visit the people, places, and things that make Kansas unique and special. The series covers history, the arts, culture, the performing arts, politics, literature, and more woven together by visits to historical sites. Every story is a way to connect different communities across the state, to understand and find meaning in the lives and work of Kansas residents, and to bring the people of Kansas together.
KUED hosts a Reading Marathon Kickoff in conjunction with the Salt Lake Public Library during the STEM Festival. The kickoff party invites families to pick up a Reading Log, receive free books, meet favorite PBS Kids characters and participate in engaging Science, Technology, Engineering and Math activities. In an effort to reach a wide geographic population, KUED utilizes partnering organizations to distribute Reading Marathon information.
Modern Gardener is a digital series produced by KUED that celebrates the people, organizations and communities committed to helping gardeners in the states unique region.
VERVE is KUED’s online series exploring creativity. Now in its sixth season, the series explores local people, creative passion, innovations and imagination.
The KVIE Art Auction is an annual, live-televised fundraising event. Over 250 pieces of artwork are donated by artists throughout the greater Sacramento region, curated from hundreds of submissions. Local artists receive print, on-air and web recognition and several report gaining commissions as a result of the exposure.
MINNESOTA REMEMBERS VIETNAM is a statewide initiative aimed at inspiring Minnesotans to remember and share stories, recognize bravery, express their reasons for dissent, and foster understanding around the lasting impact of the events of 50 years ago.

Nostalgia Nights is an experiential event series designed to engage first-stage adults (ages 25-45) with Twin Cities PBS. The events are fun social gatherings that leverage beloved PBS shows and personalities like Mister Rogers and Bob Ross to spark a sense of nostalgia among audiences who grew up with these formative icons. The live events are themed, include a cash bar, and have the potential to pull in new members and listeners.
Twin Cities PBS’s “Out North: MNLGBTQ History” was designed to explore the untold histories of Minnesota’s LGBTQ pioneers, legislators, change makers, and resistors. Starting as one idea from one donor, it grew organically into a comprehensive initiative comprising one two-hour film, more than seven shorts, and more than 45 community events. It combined local community partnerships, screenings, intergenerational conversations, and watch parties — all in response to appetite and demand for engagement around these histories.
In collaboration with the Minnesota Housing Partnership, TPT Partnerships produced “Sold Out: Affordable Housing at Risk,” a documentary that examines the shrinking supply of affordable housing in Minnesota through the experiences of displaced tenants and concerned experts. They also produced a number of digital shorts and a discussion guide to aid in meaningful engagement with the project.
