Editorial independence policy

We adhere to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News.

Current retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization and the trust of our readers. We maintain a firewall between editorial  decisions and all sources of revenue. Acceptance of foundation grants, donations, sponsorships, advertising or in-kind support from American University, Current’s owner, does not constitute endorsement of their products, services, practices or opinions.

Current may consider donations and grants supporting coverage of particular topics, but our staff maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right to review or influence our editorial content. Unauthorized distribution of our news coverage and commentary is prohibited. All sponsored content is clearly labeled as such.

Current will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. In 2023, those donors include the Wyncote Foundation and the Knight Foundation.

Current will always clearly identify the authors of stories and commentaries. We invite comments but will delete those that include personal attacks or violate standards of basic decency. We welcome feedback about the accuracy of our reporting and will be transparent about making corrections to errors in our stories by posting a correction note at the bottom of the post.
