Building Strong Brains: Tennessee ACEs Initiative

Chronic childhood trauma, or what experts call adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), can disrupt a child’s brain-building process. “Building Strong Brains: Tennessee ACEs Initiative” is a statewide effort to establish Tennessee as a national model for how a state can promote culture change in early childhood based on a philosophy that preventing and mitigating adverse childhood experiences, and their impact, is the most promising approach to helping Tennessee children lead productive, healthy lives and ensure the future prosperity of the state.

VERVE is KUED’s online series exploring creativity. Now in its sixth season, the series explores local people, creative passion, innovations and imagination. 

Southern Remedy

Southern Remedy is Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s flagship health and wellness initiative. It includes a doctor call-in radio show every weekday, a health and wellness documentary TV/digital program, a Health Minute interstitial that airs during the weekly half-hour news round-up, health issues news and radio reporting, a healthy living guide, and materials to teach adults and children about good health habits.

KUOW’s “Ask A…” Project

KUOW’s “Ask A…” project is a community engagement initiative to promote empathy and understanding with groups that have been “othered” by media or politics. It features person-to-person conversation events where a group of “askers” have consecutive eight-minute conversations with a group of “answerers,” followed by a group discussion and a shared meal. Events have included Muslims, Trump supporters, transgender people, journalists, foster parents, immigrants, gun owners, and Special Olympics athletes.

Writer’s Block

Writer’s Block is a station initiative that brings together local playwrights, poets, and story tellers to present their original work before a live studio audience.

KVIE Art Auction

The KVIE Art Auction is an annual, live-televised fundraising event. Over 250 pieces of artwork are donated by artists throughout the greater Sacramento region, curated from hundreds of submissions. Local artists receive print, on-air and web recognition and several report gaining commissions as a result of the exposure.

What Listening Looks Like

“What Listening Looks Like” asked people to show us where they listen to our radio services and had them take a selfie and send it to us to be shared on our website. We had an underwriter who would donate $5 for every photo submitted.

News Briefings & Classical Conversations

Every other month, Nashville Public Radio hosts either a News Briefing or Classical Conversation luncheon event at our station. The News Briefing is a chance for listeners of WPLN 90.3FM (the news station) and local community leaders to visit the station, meet local hosts, hear first about upcoming projects and, most importantly, to ask questions and provide feedback directly to the station.

Turning the Tables: KC Showcase

In a local take on the NPR series “Turning the Tables,” musician and staff writer at 90.9 The Bridge, Michelle Bacon, looked at gender, equality and the future of the Kansas City music scene. Her four part series “Turning the Tables: KC Edition,” published at bridge909.org, culminated in a live panel and showcase of women in music.

Classical: BTS is a six-part webseries devoted to revealing the lesser-seen — and heard — stories about classical music in central Illinois.

Struggling For Care: Stories of the San Joaquin Valley’s Doctor Shortage

Valley Public Radio’s Kerry Klein produced a reporting and community engagement project on the severe shortage of doctors in the San Joaquin Valley. It included four in-depth reports, a public forum event held at the radio station, and an online interactive map featuring listener stories dealing with the San Joaquin Valley’s shortage of health care providers.

WETA Historical D.C. Metro Map Digital Feature

WETA Digital created the Historical D.C. Metro Map interactive by identifying quirky and interesting stories for the areas in proximity to each transit stop. The stories were then used to create a reimagined interactive map with new “historical” names for each Metrorail station.

100 Days in Appalachia

100 Days in Appalachia is a reporting project created the day after the 2016 election that pushes back against parachute journalists’ and national narratives about rural America. It’s published at the West Virginia University Reed College of Media Innovation Center in collaboration with West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB) and The Daily Yonder, of the Center for Rural Strategies, headquartered in Kentucky.

On the Road with NET

NET is a statewide joint licensee in Nebraska, so it’s a bit daunting to try to connect face to face with our various audiences. In summer 2016, we started a station-wide initiative where we take NET “On the Road” in the spring and fall of each year with PBS kids screenings/activities, radio show, television screenings and town talks.

Dream Land: Little Rock’s West 9th Street Initiative

The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) produced an Emmy-winning documentary on the rise and fall of Little Rock, Arkansas’s successful yet segregated African-American business district (1940-50’s), using a historic building in the district known as the Dreamland Ballroom as a focal point. AETN has built dozens of community partnerships; held educational screenings, panels discussions, and workshops; and conducted riveting community dialogues on diversity and race relations throughout 2018 that will undoubtedly continue.

Out North: MNLGBTQ History

Twin Cities PBS’s “Out North: MNLGBTQ History” was designed to explore the untold histories of Minnesota’s LGBTQ pioneers, legislators, change makers, and resistors. Starting as one idea from one donor, it grew organically into a comprehensive initiative comprising one two-hour film, more than seven shorts, and more than 45 community events. It combined local community partnerships, screenings, intergenerational conversations, and watch parties — all in response to appetite and demand for engagement around these histories.

WABE Civic Engagement and Policy Education Events

Atlanta PBA has launched a year-long series of community events focused on civic engagement and policy education with a secondary goal of enticing a younger, more diverse audience into political involvement. PBA plans to develop community conversations on Governance & Politics, Education, Health and Healthcare, Gentrification & Income inequality, Environmental Sustainability & Conservation, and Diversity in Arts & Culture. Each of the events will be recorded for broadcast on either the radio, TV or web.

90.5 WUOL Education Outreach (2017 Finalist)

90.5 WUOL, a member station of Louisville Public Media, provides access to classical music to more citizens of the region than all other arts organizations combined. The station has made a concerted effort to embrace its role as a leader in education, young artist development, and community service, through the creation of outreach programs that encourage children, families, and schools to engage with classical music and public radio stories.

WUWM/Precious Lives

Precious Lives is a multiplatform civic engagement project that examines the crisis of gun violence among young people in the Milwaukee area. Over its two-year life, it aspires to “open conversations” between individuals, organizations and community constituencies. Partners include 371 Productions; public radio’s WUWM-FM; WNOV-AM, a black community-oriented commercial station; the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism.
