Project Southwest is an online streaming channel that focuses solely on the far southwest region of Virginia. The channel serves to promote tourism and economic growth of the region by sharing unique stories and experiences that can only be discovered in this often underappreciated and misunderstood part of Appalachia.
Spotlight PA is a collaborative project that enhances the local journalism ecosystem and strengthens our democracy by enabling Pennsylvanians in all corners to have access to high-quality, public-interest journalism about statehouse and statewide issues. Its innovative partnership model – now the largest of its kind in the U.S. – and bespoke collaborative story sharing platform and Content Management System are replicable for newsrooms across the country.
Since the pandemic hit Nevada, we have aimed to provide the most comprehensive COVID-19 data, infographics and informed context in the state. As the only major paywall-free news site in Nevada (excluding radio and television sites), all of our in-depth coronavirus reporting is accessible to all Nevadans regardless of ability to pay.

This unique project offered the region’s storytellers the platform needed to disseminate their films to a new audience through broadcast distribution of their finished films. The initiative served filmmakers from the Keys to the Treasure Coast with an audience reach of over 6.3 million, deepening the understanding of ourselves and our neighbors.
The South Florida PBS Virtual LGBTQ Town Halls series consisted of four virtual town halls that were meant to provide an online platform where LGBTQ and straight residents could interact and share experiences in a safe atmosphere.
Coinciding with the second anniversary of the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, WTJU produced a web-based audio tour of the city’s Confederate monuments and the history and meaning of those monuments today. We also aired audio pieces from that tour throughout the month of August 2019.

As a result, NHPR built new muscle that later made our coverage of COVID-19 pandemic indispensable for our state.
The California Reporting Project is a statewide collaboration of 40 local and regional newsrooms working together to cover long-secret internal investigations of police officers which were unsealed in 2019. It is a locally driven, large-scale investigative journalism project that has published more than 100 stories, including several deep-dive investigations, exposed numerous failures in accountability, and led to dismissals of criminal charges in multiple cases.
The Life Autistic is an extensive multi-platform project that explores the lives of Iowans with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It features people of different ages and abilities who each have a unique story to tell and delves into their challenges and successes.
Highlands Current Inc. is a nonprofit corporation begun in 2010 created to provide balanced reporting of news and events for the Hudson Valley communities of Cold Spring, Garrison, Nelsonville and Philipstown, N.Y. This special series took a deeper look at likely impact of climate change on the region, the challenges facing local farmers, “living on the edge” and the growing opioid crisis.
Time & Place is a regular segment on KUNR in which historian Alicia Barber presents narratives and voices from the past, focusing on the rich and diverse heritage of Northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra. Alicia has produced roughly 50 segments on a wide range of topics, including Reno’s unique gambling and divorce industries, along with historical examination of how racism and sexism have shaped current civic life. Digital reporters from the University of Nevada’s School of Journalism create audiograms of these stories for social media.
Twin Cities PBS put a stake in the ground with the launch of TPToriginals.org. The site showcases the station’s extensive library of local productions. It also serves as a learning laboratory for developing digital-first, short-form video storytelling aimed at engaging Minnesota audiences that may not see themselves or their communities reflected in broadcast programming. The site provides a steady stream of local content that triggers pride of place, shares and challenges viewers’ perspectives on what it means to call this state home.
Each summer, the Young Voices Media Project teaches teens in the Salinas Valley the essentials of media literacy, critical thinking, journalism, writing and news reporting. Students pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, develop sources and write/produce their own news stories while they develop the confidence and skills for civic involvement. Young Voices is a project of Voices of Monterey Bay, a non-profit news magazine that publishes local stories for Monterey and Santa Cruz counties in California’s Central Coast.
