Project Southwest

Project Southwest is an online streaming channel that focuses solely on the far southwest region of Virginia. The channel serves to promote tourism and economic growth of the region by sharing unique stories and experiences that can only be discovered in this often underappreciated and misunderstood part of Appalachia.

Spotlight PA’s Story-Sharing Platform

Spotlight PA is a collaborative project that enhances the local journalism ecosystem and strengthens our democracy by enabling Pennsylvanians in all corners to have access to high-quality, public-interest journalism about statehouse and statewide issues. Its innovative partnership model – now the largest of its kind in the U.S. – and bespoke collaborative story sharing platform and Content Management System are replicable for newsrooms across the country.

The Nevada Independent Coronavirus Data Project

Since the pandemic hit Nevada, we have aimed to provide the most comprehensive COVID-19 data, infographics and informed context in the state. As the only major paywall-free news site in Nevada (excluding radio and television sites), all of our in-depth coronavirus reporting is accessible to all Nevadans regardless of ability to pay.

KidVision Healthy Habits Series

Series of one-minute interstitials (spots) featuring South Florida PBS KidVision’s Miss Penny providing information to families and children about the many changes in their lives due to Coronavirus, from practicing healthy habits to explaining why and how our lives and habits have changed due to the pandemic as well as preparing them for the new protocols they will see when they return to school.

South Florida PBS film-maker project

This unique project offered the region’s storytellers the platform needed to disseminate their films to a new audience through broadcast distribution of their finished films. The initiative served filmmakers from the Keys to the Treasure Coast with an audience reach of over 6.3 million, deepening the understanding of ourselves and our neighbors.

LGBTQ Virtual Town Halls

The South Florida PBS Virtual LGBTQ Town Halls series consisted of four virtual town halls that were meant to provide an online platform where LGBTQ and straight residents could interact and share experiences in a safe atmosphere.

Marked By These Monuments

Coinciding with the second anniversary of the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, WTJU produced a web-based audio tour of the city’s Confederate monuments and the history and meaning of those monuments today. We also aired audio pieces from that tour throughout the month of August 2019.

Science Pub BING

Science Pub BING engages the community of the Southern Tier of New York and connects them with regional scientists and experts in a lectures series followed by lively Q&A sessions. These events are designed to offer the public a greater understanding of the science, technology and engineering happening at our local universities and area businesses, while these experts hone their science communication skills bringing complex topics to the general public.

Million Minute Challenge

The Million Minute Challenge was an initiative to get people of all ages and backgrounds in Lehigh Valley reading. We asked our community to come together to read 1,000,000 minutes in March 2020, Reading Awareness Month, and what resulted was a fun, engaging, exciting, audience-captivating event that surpassed its goals and put reading at the center.

The Great TV Auction

WCTE’s largest fundraiser asks for donations, then auctions off everything on live TV. This helps promote businesses in our community.

LPB’s The Helpers

Inspired by the words of Fred Rogers, LPB’s “The Helpers” is a digital series that aims to help people cope with their negative feelings by showing them that good things are still happening in their communities as their neighbors find ways to overcome their own challenges and fears.

St. Louis Public Radio’s livestream on Twitch has transformed the way our journalists connect with our audience and gives both the space and support to examine challenging news thoughtfully.

HomeStage

Concert halls and theatres closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and people are mostly staying at home, which has changed the way we enjoy music performances. WXXI’s HomeStage is a virtual concert experience, with local musicians of all genres performing in their homes for all to enjoy in our homes.

NH Primary 2020

In covering the 2020 New Hampshire Primary, New Hampshire Public Radio set out to interrogate every assumption about ithe primary process and our own political journalism Through questions and suggestions, the public set our reporting agenda. As a result, NHPR built new muscle that later made our coverage of COVID-19 pandemic indispensable for our state.

California Reporting Project

The California Reporting Project is a statewide collaboration of 40 local and regional newsrooms working together to cover long-secret internal investigations of police officers which were unsealed in 2019. It is a locally driven, large-scale investigative journalism project that has published more than 100 stories, including several deep-dive investigations, exposed numerous failures in accountability, and led to dismissals of criminal charges in multiple cases.

The Life Autistic

The Life Autistic is an extensive multi-platform project that explores the lives of Iowans with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It features people of different ages and abilities who each have a unique story to tell and delves into their challenges and successes.

Playtime Pad Research Project

The Playtime Pad Research Project investigates the effectiveness of tablet-based learning initiatives in early childhood math literacy, while providing access to the latest digital learning tools for students, teachers, and parents. Initiated by the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and WKAR Public Media at Michigan State University, the Playtime Pad Research Project is a unique partnership connecting PBS KIDS, the College of Education at MSU, and the Lansing School District.

Finding Home

In the summer of 2019, Arizona Public Media published “Finding Home,” a radio news series focused on housing and issues of access, affordability, discrimination, cultural identity, and the changing neighborhoods of Tucson. Content included multiple episodes of our half-hour radio programs, a slate of feature radio news stories, a dedicated web page, and a live community conversation. At a public event, held a month after the series aired, the show host moderated a discussion between panelists representing development, fair housing, and neighborhood associations.

Ross Fest

Ross Fest was organized by WNIN to celebrate painter and art instructor Robert Ross, the creator of The Joy of Painting. The station asked a certified Bob Ross landscape instructor to help create an experience that would give participants a certified Bob Ross painting to take home and enjoy forever. WNIN added a light wall to play a Joy of Painting episode, threw in some music, food trucks, a bar trailer and a Bob Ross costume contest… attracting hundreds of people to a made-for-social-media engagement event.

MindShift

KQED’s MindShift newsletter reaches more than 100,000 teachers, principals, learning coaches, librarians and others in the education profession. In the spring of 2019, MindShift began asking newsletter subscribers to submit questions via Google Form to ask other 100,000 subscribers. MindShift editors selected questions every 1-2 weeks, enabling readers to share tips in a tightly moderated way about thorny issues in education.
