Uncuffed is a podcast and radio series made by people incarcerated in California prisons. KALW producers teach them how to record and edit powerful audio stories about life on the inside. Uncuffed seeks to create emotional, human stories to shift the narrative around incarcerated people and change the criminal justice system.
Grace Weber’s Music Lab (GWML) is a free monthly music education program and talent accelerator for Milwaukee area high schoolers, providing opportunities to refine performance skills, build connections between engaged and talented young people, expose participants to the multiple career opportunities available in creative industries and to participate in performances and talks. This program is critical to meeting the growing and changing needs of our city and youth. Grace Weber’s Music Lab reaches kids with art forms that are increasingly relevant and central to their lives, including diverse music from hip-hop to alternative to spoken word.
The RadioWest Book Club brings listeners together to read and talk about books and has proven to be a great way to reach new audiences, engage with librarians, scholars and other community partners and create an enduring podcast of the monthly club discussions.

Valley Public Radio launches a new broadcast series and podcast dedicated to rediscovering the short stories of Pulitzer Prize winning author and Fresno native William Saroyan. The program features acclaimed authors reading the works and discussing their relevance to our lives in the COVID-19 era.
“Get Lit with All Of It” is a virtual book club in partnership with the New York Public Library (NYPL) that has become a source of culture, connection and community for New Yorkers even as we remain apart. Participants access each month’s book for free using the NYPL app (with thousands of extra e-copies made available for a free 3-week download) and each month, Alison Stewart hosts a livestream book club event with the featured author, special musical guests and experts who put the themes of the books in a cultural context. “Get Lit” has helped “All of It” reach a larger audience than ever before, and of the top 10 checkouts from the NYPL from March-August 2020, three are are “Get Lit” books.
WCMU is re-imagining local journalism by creating partnerships with rural newspapers to produce content and at the same time train J students in broadcast, print and internet story telling. We are harnessing the reach of a public radio network and the local strength of community newspapers to provide an outstanding product, remind news consumers about the value of local news, and give small papers much-needed boots on the ground during a time when contractions in the industry are threatening their existence.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the KPCC-LAist newsroom has invited questions from its audience. Nearly 4,000 people have written in and in answering the questions, we have found new sources, new stories and new audiences, and more than half of the participants have opted into newsletters.
Jazz 91.9 WCLK convened more than 100 musicians at Atlanta City Hall Atrium for a portrait with the Mayor of Atlanta – WCLK Great Day in Atlanta with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms – an ode to Art Kane and his 1958 photography, A Great Day in Harlem. WCLK issued a call for Atlanta-based musicians and amassed a list of performing artists who represent the beauty, the genius and the spirit of Atlanta’s Jazz Community.

On the first Thursday of every month from 7 to 8 p.m., WTIP hosts a live interactive conversation on an issue of great community importance. This participatory program is designed to give everyone a voice in the meaningful and vital discussions on public affairs issues that shape the health and well-being of our community. Because we have had to pivot our technical approach to the program due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our community guests are invited to participate through Zoom and listeners are invited to call in or email with questions, comments and concerns prior to the show.
To address the lull in listenership during specific blocks of programming during membership drives, Jazz 91.9 WCLK created a special tribute to Jazz in a segment call Signature Serenade. Signature Serenade is a two-hour block of programming during membership campaigns, where we invite corporate influencers, business professionals, community leaders, college presidents and dignitaries to host the segment, play their selection of favorite tunes and tell their stories, all while helping to fund raise for WCLK.
Each Thursday morning at 10 a.m., kids and grown-ups across Alaska’s Southern Kenai Peninsula join local Homer librarian Claudia Haines for an hour of stories, music and movement on the radio. Storytime offers young families a no-cost program to grow early literacy skills, access to high quality books and media and connect with other families while staying safe at home during the pandemic.
City Limits: Winds of Change examines the harmful impacts of structural racism on society and the social and cultural movements focused on economic, political, and social equity. Following City Limits, a Poverty Project; Winds of Change explores systemic racism, unconscious bias, police reform, and anti-racism efforts in Syracuse. City Limits features the voices of the people who are working to hold organizations accountable for change.

WLRH promotes our community’s local musicians and vibrant performing arts scene through two parallel efforts. Local Aliens is a long running compilation CD series of all-local musicians produced by WLRH and given away to the community for free; while Valley Sounds is an all-local weekly broadcast music show and award-winning podcast featuring original music of all genres created and performed in the Tennessee Valley.
