The vastness and diversity of New York City means many residents are unaware of the worlds existing next door, around the block, behind the sign in a foreign tongue. In a bid to bring the city closer together and recognize the great journalism going on in every corner of the city, City Limits’ Voices of New York project translates news from Spanish, Chinese, Polish, Nepalese, Japanese, Russian, Bengali and other languages into English. This amplifies some of the smallest, more vital media voices in our city,

Hidden in Plain Sight

WSHU Public Radio collaborates with undergraduate journalism students to craft local interest stories for on-air broadcast. This initiative offers a replicable framework for radio stations to partner with colleges or universities in a win/win partnership that promotes much needed local news and bolsters community pride showcasing hyper-local stories while giving students experiential learning opportunities and exposing them to the professional journalism process.
WBGO Livestream and Education Hubs

In response to how the pandemic has changed our lives, WBGO created two new services, The WBGO Livestream Hub and the WBGO Education Hub, to connect our community to opportunities to experience live music safely, give local musicians a no-cost way to message out their online performances and connect area students and musicians for music education opportunities unavailable before the lockdown. We used social media and our community calendar, available to all NPR stations using Core Publisher, and other free tools to build this online resource.
Project Southwest

Project Southwest is an online streaming channel that focuses solely on the far southwest region of Virginia. The channel serves to promote tourism and economic growth of the region by sharing unique stories and experiences that can only be discovered in this often underappreciated and misunderstood part of Appalachia.
KZMU Live Radio Plays
|
KZMU’s annual live, original radio plays are a precious architectural space, constructed sonically, to be used as an imaginative stage to explore both the lore and realities of the rural, desert communities of our listeners. Using the broadcast medium, and building on the radio theater tradition that began in the 1930’s, KZMU’s performances create a platform for local directors, musicians, voice actors, foley artists, stage hands and sound and lighting technicians.

In our rural peninsula sticking out into the North Atlantic Ocean, creative activity has long played a key role – the quality of light in Cape Cod inspired visual artists, the accepting environment welcomed all and the intersection of sea and land created a haven for the creative mind. Today, this economic sector is overshadowed by tourism, real estate and a schism between seasonal wealth and year round survival. ArtsLight was created by our small community nonprofit station to “shine a light” on an under-reported area and, by shining that light, also cultivate a shared understanding of a creative economy that delivers far more than a visitor attraction.

COVID Diaries: Stories of Resilience

“COVID Diaries: Stories of Resilience” is a 10-week multimedia visual, audio, and written word series that tell stories of resilience in the local community. It focuses on our local shared experience of the coronavirus pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests over the killing of George Floyd and others. WDET partnered with Documenting Detroit, a photojournalism and arts organization, to produce and tell these stories through the eyes of five local documentary photographers and one spoken word artist.
KOSU Audio Diaries

As journalists were furloughed and Oklahomans became isolated during the pandemic, KOSU worked to keep the community connected and to preserve these snapshots of history for future generations through user-submitted audio diaries. In the same way news archives from 1918 have provided perspective for journalists today, these audio diaries are being archived in collaboration with the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Concert halls and theatres closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and people are mostly staying at home, which has changed the way we enjoy music performances. WXXI’s HomeStage is a virtual concert experience, with local musicians of all genres performing in their homes for all to enjoy in our homes.
Making Buffalo Home

Making Buffalo Home is a local multi-platform project from Buffalo Toronto Public Media designed to share the stories of Buffalo’s newest neighbors from around the world and celebrate the rich immigrant history of the city through powerful storytelling. Through digital videos, television programs, radio features, social media and in-person events, viewers and listeners learned more about each other, creating a better understanding of our collective immigration story.

Faces of Hunger

The Faces of Hunger project was a yearlong journalism and community dialogue initiative from Carolina Public Press that focused on issues of hunger and food insecurity in rural North Carolina. Through in-depth multimedia reporting, resource sharing and free community events, and news and community partnerships that highlighted dialogue and potential solutions, Carolina Public Press shined the spotlight on the issues and systems contributing to hunger and food hardship in the state.
You Know The Place

You Know the Place (YKTP) is a podcast that examines the small local businesses most of us never enter or even notice. YKTP gos to the stores overlooked by any form of media to ask: What do you sell or make? Who’s your customer? How long have you been in business? How do you compete with Walmart and Amazon? Hosted by two local writers, YKTP will enter its fourth season with 18,000 loyal users and more than 33,000 regular downloads.

To celebrate the 65th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, PBS in Topeka created this two-hour community conversation with students and teachers from the segregation era. Shot in a modern-day Cinema Verite’ style on a single day in 2019, students and teachers from the four segregated Black schools in Topeka talked about their lives prior to and after integration. The five-part series included: Growing up in Topeka’s Black Community; Family, Friends, Neighbors; School and You (Segregation); School and You (Integration); and After-effects (outcomes, impact).
