Public radio news directors hear from colleagues and experts on preventing, and responding to, harassment in newsrooms.
“I don’t want to see confidence in a broken system that allowed dangerous behavior to continue,” said one producer.
Morgan Lewis conducted a two-month investigation into how NPR management responded to harassment allegations against the former news chief.
A daylong summit about sexual misconduct in newsrooms included discussion of how NPR and other media organizations have enabled powerful men at the expense of female employees.
The board also heard messages of support for CEO Jarl Mohn.
“I am unable to devote the amount of time that the current situation … demands of the NPR board chair to be truly effective,” said Roger LaMay.
Jarl Mohn also disclosed new incidents of misconduct from NPR’s former news chief.
Meanwhile, CEO Jarl Mohn has told employees he is aiming for a “culture shift” at the network.
CEO Jarl Mohn said he asked NPR’s newsroom leader for his resignation because of his “inappropriate behavior.”
The Washington Post reported that NPR is investigating complaints by two women who allege Oreskes made inappropriate contact with them in the 1990s.
Localism and independence are crucial for rebuilding trust and serious connections with the audience, Oreskes argued.
NPR’s new head of news discusses the future of All Things Considered, achieving diversity, and the need for more collaboration among NPR and member stations.
Oreskes wants NPR and member stations to collaborate more seamlessly, both to break more and better news, but also to better reflect the entirety of the country.
“The result we need is more robust local reporting for national audiences.”
