President Biden has proposed upping CPB’s FY27 appropriation to $595 million.
The new PBS Kids series is a literacy show “about different ways to communicate … and understanding peoples’ points of view,” says creator Tim McKeon.
If approved, the appropriation would be a record sum for CPB.
CPB President Pat Harrison said she’s “grateful” for the proposed increase to the corporation’s appropriation.
CPB will receive an additional $10 million in its base appropriation, and public media’s FEMA grant program gets a $16 million boost.
The podcasts produced by Ball State PBS, East Tennessee PBS, KERA and WNET are expected to debut next year.
The program gives stations “the opportunity to explore innovative ways to help parents and children learn together,” said CPB’s Debra Tica Sanchez.
The administration endorsed a CPB proposal that could free up system support funds for other uses.
The legislation also provides $41 million for the Next Generation Warning System grant program at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The measure approved for consideration by the full House proposes an increase of nearly 27% from CPB’s current funding levels and recommends $20 million for a public safety program funded through FEMA.
Additional programs will be produced by GBH in Boston and Dave Peth.
An eight-episode prequel is setting the stage for the PBS Kids show’s July premiere.
The bill would boost Ready To Learn funding by more than $2 million.
Fourteen public television stations will each get $175,000.
CPB would get only $15.5 million next year and $15 million in 2020 to shut itself down.
Both the House and Senate Appropriation panels defied the president on CPB funding.
The committee recommends $25.7 million for the public TV early literacy project.
The bill does not include funding for public broadcasting’s interconnection project or public TV’s Ready To Learn.
The device’s spotlighting of PBS content is the most appealing aspect for education and engagement executives.
