WNET plans to buy Long Island radio station

New York’s WNET is looking to purchase a radio station on Long Island.

The public TV broadcaster intends to buy WPPB-FM in Southampton, N.Y., for more than $940,000 from Peconic Public Broadcasting, according to FCC documents. 

WPPB, an NPR member station, airs a mix of news and music and covers eastern Long Island. It would be WNET’s first radio station.  

The two parties agreed to a public service operating agreement that allows WNET to take over WPPB’s day-to-day operations prior to the sale’s closing date.

WNET is seeking approval of the sale from the FCC and the New York state attorney general’s office, according to a statement shared by a WNET spokesperson. The spokesperson declined to comment until after the review process is complete.
