A photojournalist filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming NPR violated copyright by publishing one of his photos on its website without permission.

Israel-based Amnon Gutman is objecting to NPR’s use in 2012 of one of his photos, which had previously appeared in a slideshow on Foreign Policy’s website. The NPR post linked to the Foreign Policy slideshow and used text from its article.

In the lawsuit, Gutman said he licensed use of the photo to Foreign Policy. “NPR did not license the Photograph from Plaintiff for its article, nor did NPR have Plaintiff’s permission or consent to publish the Photograph on its Website,” the lawsuit claims. Gutman didn’t discover the alleged infringement until last month, the lawsuit said.

NPR has 21 days to respond to the summons. Representatives of NPR and Foreign Policy did not respond to requests for comment.
