KidVision Full STEAM Ahead

While school was out, learning didn’t stop thanks to South Florida PBS’ KidVision: Full STEAM Ahead series, led by KidVision’s Miss Penny. This series educated children on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math with seven different virtual events consisting of fun hands-on activities. Little scientists and artists alike, all children, were able to find a virtual event that aligned with their interests or allowed them to explore new ones.

This series ran for seven consecutive weeks starting on Thursday, June 30th at 2 PM and continuing through August 11th each Thursday at 2:00 PM LIVE on ZOOM, Facebook, and YouTube! After each virtual event, the activities aired on all South Florida PBS channels (WPBT, WXEL, and South Florida PBS Kids 24/7). In episode one, “All Aboard” to stay afloat kids explored Science through a sink and float experiment. Kids at home used simple materials found at home like a clear tub, water, two trays, towel, and small sink & float objects. In episode two, kids got a taste of magic with “Magic Balloons.” This activity explored the Science of static electricity with balloons. Kids at home used one balloon, one piece of paper, and one spoonful of sugar. In episode three, kids fulfilled their dreams of being a popstar with a “Music Video Challenge.” The activity explored Technology through video making. Kids at home used a phone that could record and shared videos. In episode four, “Rock & Roll”, kids were taught how to construct rock sculptures. This activity explored Engineering through kinetic sculptures. Kids at home used one large rock/stone and colorful pipe cleaners. In episode 5, “Dot-to-Dot” kids created masterpieces. This activity explored Art through abstraction. Kids at home used one piece of white paper and bright/colorful markers. Episode six encouraged children to be a star student and create “Star Cards.” This activity explored Math through counting. Kids at home used a pack of index cards, one pack of star stickers, and one marker. The seventh and final installment of Full STEAM Ahead, “What is it Worth?” was all about money. Kids joined us on Zoom to learn how many coins are in a dollar. This activity explored Math by using money. Kids at home used 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, 4 quarters, 1 dollar bill, 4 clear cups, 1 sheet of paper, a pencil, and a magnifying glass.
