The management of WHQR in Wilmington, N.C., has voluntarily recognized a union.

Station manager Kevin Crane confirmed to Current in an email that the union was recognized. Staffers throughout the organization announced last month their intent to unionize with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. The staffers said they sought “a better, healthier and more transparent workplace.”

Station leadership informed staffers last week that they “agreed to voluntarily recognize our union via a card check,” the union said on Twitter.

“We are simply ecstatic to join our public media colleagues around the nation in forming a union, and coming together for our own betterment, and the betterment of our beloved institution,” the union added.
