Former NPR host and correspondent Sam Sanders will join the Vox Media Podcast Network to helm a new flagship culture podcast for Vulture.

With his sign-off from NPR last week and move to Vox, Sanders becomes the second high-profile NPR host in a year to depart for the explainer news site.

After five years as founding host of NPR’s It’s Been a Minute, Sanders announced Tuesday that he’ll join New York magazine and Vox to develop a flagship podcast for the magazine’s cultural vertical.

Sanders starts his new hosting job this April, and the show is slated to launch later this spring, according to a Vox statement. Other NPR alumni, including New York’s editorial director for audio and former NPR Invisibilia host Hanna Rosin, will also work on the podcast.

“I have been incredibly jealous of Vulture for years,” Sanders said in a news release. “They’re always writing the pieces I wish I’d thought of first, and covering the culture in ways that aren’t just new and fresh, but also game-changing and conversation-shifting.”

“Getting the chance to showcase and work alongside the journalists I’ve been trying to keep up with for so long is more than just a dream come true; it’s a match made in heaven,” Sanders said. “And to be supported by such a storied institution as New York magazine, and the truly ascendant Vox Media Podcast Network — what a dream! There’s really no way this isn’t going to be amazing. Excited is an understatement.”

Before Sanders’ jump to Vox, Noel King left her Morning Edition co-host role at NPR in November to co-host Today, Explained, Vox’s daily news podcast.
