Local Boost

The Voice of San Diego “Local Boost” initiative spurs the local economy and helps to ensure the sustainability of our nonprofit newsroom. The program leverages philanthropy to incentivize sponsorship and marketing packages for local small businesses and nonprofits, diversifying our revenue sources and demonstrating our values and commitment to our local community.

At-Home Learning

At-Home Learning was a rapid response learning service for school closures in our local broadcast region. We created an on-air and digital service that was then shared with PBS stations across the country.

Get Lit with All Of It

“Get Lit with All Of It” is a virtual book club in partnership with the New York Public Library (NYPL) that has become a source of culture, connection and community for New Yorkers even as we remain apart. Participants access each month’s book for free using the NYPL app (with thousands of extra e-copies made available for a free 3-week download) and each month, Alison Stewart hosts a livestream book club event with the featured author, special musical guests and experts who put the themes of the books in a cultural context. “Get Lit” has helped “All of It” reach a larger audience than ever before, and of the top 10 checkouts from the NYPL from March-August 2020, three are are “Get Lit” books.

Block Club Chicago’s Free West Side Resource Fair

Block Club Chicago hosted a free resource fair on the West Side, bringing together 21 community organizations to offer free food, toiletries and health screenings to residents. Our neighborhood reporter was also on hand to take story tips and meet people.

STEM Adventures

When COVID-19 shutdowns wiped out the possibility of our in-person, hands-on SciGirls Summer camp program for 2020, we created a 5-part series of television programs (30 minutes each) focusing on STEM careers and subjects using modified production resources. Not only was the final result available to the young women who would normally have been part of our camp, but it was also available to our entire community through broadcast, cable, online access and supporting partner organizations.

It’s Camp! Virtual Summer Camp

COVID-19 and the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s orders for social distancing put a damper on traditional kids’ summer camps. PBS39’s “It’s Camp!” brought the best parts of camp into kids’ homes every weekday during the summer of 2020. This 30-minute program for kids ages 9-14 taught science, art, fitness, survival skills, connecting with nature, and more.

Learning Across Kansas

In March 2020, COVID-19 created a learning crisis across our entire country. The Kansas Department of Education recognized an opportunity to partner with PBS affiliates across Kansas to create shows to limit the “summer slide” for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. This initiative became known as Learning Across Kansas.

The TIF Illumination Project

Tax Increment Financing districts (TIFs) divert billions of public property tax dollars from local units of government across the USA annually. This is a secretive and corrupt process that sends public dollars to private developers with virtually no grassroots input or evaluation. This is a national story with unlimited local news hooks. It is part of a larger conversation on local economic development, economic and racial justice, government accountability and crass corruption (or, as we say, in Chicago, “pay to play” politics), and it offers rich opportunities for civic engagement, journalism and and volunteer-driven research.

Jazz 91.9 WCLK convened more than 100 musicians at Atlanta City Hall Atrium for a portrait with the Mayor of Atlanta – WCLK Great Day in Atlanta with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms – an ode to Art Kane and his 1958 photography, A Great Day in Harlem. WCLK issued a call for Atlanta-based musicians and amassed a list of performing artists who represent the beauty, the genius and the spirit of Atlanta’s Jazz Community.

WTIP Community Conversations

On the first Thursday of every month from 7 to 8 p.m., WTIP hosts a live interactive conversation on an issue of great community importance. This participatory program is designed to give everyone a voice in the meaningful and vital discussions on public affairs issues that shape the health and well-being of our community. Because we have had to pivot our technical approach to the program due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our community guests are invited to participate through Zoom and listeners are invited to call in or email with questions, comments and concerns prior to the show.

BUZZ is an inspiring TV show that profiles nonprofit organizations and the marketing pros that help them do MORE, do BETTER, by creating MORE BUZZ.

Storytime Radio Hour

Each Thursday morning at 10 a.m., kids and grown-ups across Alaska’s Southern Kenai Peninsula join local Homer librarian Claudia Haines for an hour of stories, music and movement on the radio. Storytime offers young families a no-cost program to grow early literacy skills, access to high quality books and media and connect with other families while staying safe at home during the pandemic.

Aiding the Southern Nevada Community through COVID-19

After the governor of Nevada ordered the closure of all schools in the state, Vegas PBS immediately took action. Using the station’s capacity for digital distribution and production, Vegas PBS facilitated at-home learning with curriculum-based programming, provided critical information about COVID-19 and assisted displaced workers with our online workforce training programs.

Downtown Film Festival

Everyone has a story, and this year those stories will be told in a big way at Downtown Film, with a full schedule of festival award-winning documentaries, interesting talk-backs, engaging workshops with filmmakers, local contests and more. As the sun goes down, the festival takes cinema under the stars for an after-dark film walkabout, with the top local videos from the American Portrait video categories projected onto the sides of Cookeville’s landmark west side buildings.

The Local

The Local is a daily dose of hometown news for Portland, Oregon. New episodes are released every weekday morning; each installment features a rundown of the day’s top stories, a featured story segment and an interview with someone from the community — a local politician, creative, thinker, journalist or leader.

WUCF Content Collaborative

The Content Collaborative led by WUCF is a strategic partnership initiative among arts and news organizations in Central Florida to develop and distribute content with limited resources and staff. The Collaborative leverages world-class content created by community partners with WUCF’s production expertise to provide new on-air programming for public media audiences.

City Limits: Winds of Change

City Limits: Winds of Change examines the harmful impacts of structural racism on society and the social and cultural movements focused on economic, political, and social equity. Following City Limits, a Poverty Project; Winds of Change explores systemic racism, unconscious bias, police reform, and anti-racism efforts in Syracuse. City Limits features the voices of the people who are working to hold organizations accountable for change.

EVERY DAY

During the first month of the lockdown, KEET went into the field and recorded the experiences of those who had to work during the pandemic Every Day to keep society running.

Speaking Grief

Speaking Grief is a multiplatform initiative aimed at creating a more grief-aware society. It validates grief as a normal, healthy part of the human experience, addresses the importance of support from friends and family and offers guidance on how to show up for people in their darkest moments.
