David Reyes Vázquez has been named president of the Puerto Rican Public Broadcasting Corp., its board of directors announced Wednesday.

Reyes Vázquez became VP at the network in April 2025. He continued to serve as a TV news anchor, according to Puerto Rican outlet Prímera Hora. Reyes Vázquez has worked as a journalist at WIPR for over 40 years.

He announced the end of his anchor duties during a broadcast Thursday. “This begins, for me, a new stage of service,” he said. “For decades, I had the privilege of accompanying you, keeping you informed, and sharing with you the most important moments in our country. Though I won’t be in front of the screen every day as has been the habit, I will continue working with the same commitment, passion and love for this outlet, which has been my professional and personal home for many decades.”

His appointment follows the resignation of former PRPBC president Luis Rodríguez Díaz, who stepped down last week. Rodríguez Díaz said during an interview with the Puerto Rican TV Channel TeleOnce last week that he is eying a 2028 run for mayor of Luquillo, a municipality in the northwestern part of the territory.

“I embrace this decision with a profound appreciation for the opportunity to have served the people of Puerto Rico through public television and radio, leading a historic institution that is essential to the fortification of our national identity, culture, education and information,” Rodríguez Díaz said Wednesday during a meeting of WIPR’s board of directors.

Rodríguez Díaz was named president of the PRPBC in March 2025 by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón. Before joining the public broadcaster, he had worked in politics in roles including executive director of the Puerto Rico Traffic Safety Commission and director of the Office of Communications for the Office of Youth Affairs within the governor’s office.

“I feel proud of the work accomplished alongside the employees, producers, on-air talent, technicians, journalists and collaborators who give their best every day to keep the mission of public media alive,” Rodríguez Díaz said in a statement. “I am convinced the corporation will continue to evolve and strengthen its mission to public service. I reiterate my commitment to Puerto Rico and to the strengthening of our institutions, and I wish the corporation the greatest success in its future projects.”

The PRPBC operates radio stations WIPR 940 AM and Allegro 91.3 FM and television stations WIPR (Puerto Rico TV) and WIPM in Mayagüez.
