Iowa Public Radio Executive Director Myrna Johnson plans to retire later this year.
Johnson took the helm in 2014 and led IPR through the coronavirus pandemic and the transition from a university-backed network to an independent organization, according to a news release. The release noted other achievements, including increasing IPR’s statewide news presence, building a digital team and adding a 24-hour music station in Des Moines.

Johnson has also served on NPR’s Board of Directors for six years, the release said.
“IPR has weathered some storms over the last 12 years. But each time we have come back stronger — delivering excellence to our audience and connecting Iowans with the news, music, information, and ideas that shape our world every day,” Johnson said in the release. “With an extraordinary board and staff, and the support of our listeners and donors, I believe IPR’s best days are yet to come. The time is right for new leadership to take IPR into its next chapter.”
IPR Board Chair Libby Jacobs and Vice Chair Ken Brown will co-chair a national search for Johnson’s replacement, the release said.
“As we enter this new era, we look forward to finding an individual who shares Myrna’s commitment to serving Iowans,” Jacobs said in the release. “Iowa Public Radio is in a strong position, and that is the legacy Myrna leaves behind.”
