Texas Public Radio content staff announced Monday their intention to unionize with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
The staffers posted their petition on X, formerly known as Twitter, where they said they believe a union will “safeguard our organization’s future success.”
The organization is in the midst of a transition in leadership after CEO Joyce Slocum died of cancer earlier this year. Ashley Alvarado was named CEO in October and is expected to begin next month.
“During this difficult period of transition following the loss of a beloved, transformational CEO, executive leadership has consistently said they are committed to improving our wages and fostering a culture of unity,” the union said in the petition. “While we acknowledge and appreciate that expressed commitment, we believe the best way to improve wages and unity is to form a union and engage in the collective bargaining process.”
The staff says they seek transparency, improved pay, a “structured onboarding process,” opportunities for career growth, and “protection to openly share our concerns and hopes for the future of TPR.”
Interim CEO Rebecca Caven confirmed to Current that management received the petition Monday. “We are in the process of reviewing the letter with our leadership team and counsel, and intend to respond soon,” she wrote in an email. She declined further comment.
