Stephen George will leave his post as president and CEO of Lousiville Public Media in January, he announced Thursday on LinkedIn.
“I leave LPM feeling deep gratitude for the staff, Board, audience, members and supporters who make this vital civic offering possible,” he wrote. “I also leave with full confidence in an extraordinary team, who will carry this mission forward for many years to come.”
George said he will join the American Journalism Project as head of emerging markets.
He has worked at LPM for nine years, with six as CEO. He was also executive editor at the station.
In 2022, the station raised $1.7 million to fund new reporting positions. At the same time, the station announced a $655,000 grant from the American Journalism Project to expand its development team. Despite the additional funding, the station announced cuts earlier this year due to a budget deficit of more than $750,000.
George is also a member director on the NPR board.
“Strong local news has never been more important,” he wrote. “I’m so proud of what we’ve built at LPM, and I can’t wait to get started on what’s next.”
