American Public Media announced in a news release Tuesday that Child would conclude his 25 years hosting the classical music show in October 2025.

Carried on hundreds of public radio stations, Performance Today airs live concert recordings, in-studio performances, interviews and highlights from new albums. It won the Gabriel Award for artistic achievement in 2014.

Child said in the release he was ready to step away from the platform and to welcome new voices.

“I will dearly miss our daily meeting in the virtual space we all create together in our hearts and imaginations, via radio and streaming,” he said. “But after 25 years, I feel I have accomplished far more than I could have imagined, connecting music-makers with music-lovers in service of this wondrous art form we call classical music.”

Liwanag Ojala, chief transformation officer at American Public Media Group and brand leader for YourClassical, said Child has been the “voice of classical music in America” for 25 years.

“We will work with Fred to ensure his legacy with Performance Today is honored and that he has a fantastic final year hosting for us,” Ojala said in the release. “… We’re mutually excited for the next chapter of Performance Today and we’re working on next steps.”
