José Martínez-Saldaña will lead Radio Bilingüe alongside founding Executive Director Hugo Morales.
The two will serve as co-executive directors, the network announced earlier this month in a press release.
Martínez-Saldaña joined the organization April 2. He most recently served as deputy director for Youth Alliance, a California nonprofit organization.
Martínez-Saldaña said that the chance to join Radio Bilingüe “at this critical point in its history drew me like a magnet.”
He added that he wants to explore “ways to build on a foundation deeply rooted in community and commitment to serving indigenous and other Latino groups through our national broadcast reach and global web presence. We are in a prime moment to increase engagement on air, in our service communities, and by expanding social media and new technologies.”
“José Martínez-Saldaña is a social justice and transformational leader, mentor and coach, grounded in collaboration and community-centered service,” Morales said in the release. “After just one month of our work together, I am excited and confident about the wonderful possibilities for Radio Bilingüe’s future, and our relevant services to audiences that other media continue to ignore.”
The organization announced last year that Morales would “transition out of the day-to-day management of RB while mentoring the organization’s new leadership.”
Morales has led the organization for 45 years. The network runs 13 noncommercial FM stations and produces the Spanish-language programs Noticiero Latino and Línea Abierta.
