Evelyn Massaro, station manager and development director of WNMU-FM in Marquette, Mich., has retired after a 42-year career in public media.
“It’s never a dull moment when you work in public media and I wouldn’t have had it any other way,” Massaro said in an email confirming her retirement. “It’s been a fun ride and now I’m off to live the next chapter of my life as an eccentric sustaining member.”
Massaro worked at Northern Michigan University’s NPR station for most of her career, starting as a student employee in 1979 and joining the staff in 1983 as promotions director. She worked as membership manager at WUSF-FM in Tampa, Fla., from 1992 until 2002, when she returned to WNMU as station manager and development director. Massaro continued in both roles until June 30, her last day at the station.
Tammy Wixtrom-Johnson, who has worked as WNMU’s business and community support coordinator, was promoted to station manager, Massaro said.
