The University of Memphis board of trustees unanimously agreed Wednesday to transfer ownership of the school’s radio station, WUMR.

WUMR’s license will be transferred to Crosstown Radio Partnership Inc., a collaboration between The Daily Memphian, a local online news outlet that has worked with the university since last year, and Crosstown Redevelopment Cooperative, co-owner and operator of a mixed-use development in northern Memphis. WUMR is planning to move to the Crosstown Concourse development.

According to university documents, the recommendation followed a yearlong review of the university’s relationship with WUMR.

“College of Communication and Fine Arts leadership, along with the Provost’s office, determined there were two options for the station: cease operations altogether, or establish a relationship with outside partners to keep the station alive,” the report said. “In choosing the latter, we have put a priority on continued student involvement and opportunity.”

The university will now notify the FCC of its plans to transfer the license.
