The licensee of KNCT-TV in Killeen, Texas, announced Tuesday that the station will go dark Aug. 31.

The Central Texas College Board of Trustees had decided this spring that repacking the station after the FCC’s spectrum auction was too costly. The station estimated that relocating its signal from Channel 46 to Channel 17 would cost $4.4 million.

KNCT-TV will broadcast announcements starting in late July about how viewers can access PBS programs through KNCT’s website, according to a report from local Fox affiliate KWKT.

The shutdown will not affect the college’s public radio station.
