The Investigative News Network, an association of more than 100 nonprofit news organizations, has changed its name to the Institute for Nonprofit News.

The rebranding coincides with this week’s launch of a new website for INN, built on its own WordPress-based platform, the Largo Project.

Founded in 2009, INN is a membership organization that provides business support and training to nonprofit newsrooms. INN’s board of directors approved the name change last November during a strategic planning retreat.

“It’s really important for nonprofits every five or six years to take a look and see if they’re meeting needs,” said INN CEO Kevin Davis. “We ended up refining the mission, changing the name and doubling down on what we’re doing.”

Davis said the new name reflects the organization’s work with the broader field of nonprofit journalism, not just those organizations doing investigative work. INN also revised its mission statement.

“The new name does not mean we were looking at the importance of investigative work,” Davis said. “It is essential to the market. But the name change is a practical reflection of the fact nonprofit newsrooms do more than investigative work.”

Current is a member of INN and is preparing to launch its website on the institute’s Largo system.
