WMRA recruited a local, micro-brewery to host WMRA members for an evening of conversation with a published (often…but not always…local) author, with every WMRA member who shows their member card receiving a voucher for a free beer from the brewery. Hosted on the second Tuesday of each month, these free, open-to-the-community events have been wildly successful. In fact, they have been so successful–with WMRA listeners and members packing the facility beyond typical capacity–that we now have moved to offering tickets to the event on WMRA’s website (with the added benefit of encouraging listeners to access WMRA.org). Since the brewery does not offer complete meals for purchase to attendees, local restaurants and a local food truck have made themselves available to bring boxed suppers to attendees. One of the most successful WMRA Books & Brews evenings featured poet Rita Dove (who is from Charlottesville) at an over-capacity crowd of WMRA listeners and members who were riveted by her discussion about successfully navigating the creative life.
