“The Vietnam War” by filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick had record-breaking viewership and sparked discussion and debate about the costs of war. MINNESOTA REMEMBERS VIETNAM complemented the series with a rich collection of multimedia, including original documentaries and a series of sold out events designed to amplify the diverse experiences of Minnesotans during that complex era.
The cornerstone of the initiative is The Story Wall, an interactive website that preserves personal Vietnam War memories, photos, video and audio, and it offers unique pathways for exploration and education. The initiative ignited meaningful dialog, and it ultimately created space for community to remember, honor, understand and heal.
Over 33 million viewers nationwide tuned in to the series while others watched online – making it the most-streamed show in PBS history. This national viewing event was a meaningful opportunity for TPT to complement the series with uniquely Minnesota perspectives on the war, and bring the complex story of the Vietnam War era closer to home.
The large-scale, company-wide initiative was the very first “Issue of Consequence” for TPT and provided space and opportunity for staff to explore new ways of working collaboratively across departments with new tools and workflows, and also with outside partners and other PBS stations across the state and nation.
