The donors include the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Chicago Community Trust and the Joyce Foundation.
The station focused on upgrading the signal after an outside consultant highlighted it as key to the station’s long-term sustainability.
Media organizations including New York Public Radio have joined the BBC’s 50:50 Project, which is expanding beyond gender to track race and ethnicity.
The network argued that former employee Kevin Langley had released discrimination claims when he signed a separation agreement.
“I think especially for women and people of color, this is a piece of information that we have not had.”
The funds support the consolidation and upgrade of the station’s headquarters and production studios in Northern Virginia.
“This is an important step to grow and strengthen local journalism in Chicago,” said CPM CEO Matt Moog.
The complaint echoes another discrimination suit against the network.
