Colorado Public Radio joins Mountain West News Bureau

Colorado Public Radio is teaming up with radio stations in seven states by joining the Mountain West News Bureau.

The collaboration started in 2018 with $475,000 in CPB support and received an additional $500,000 in 2024.

It has six managing partner stations: Boise State Public Radio in Idaho; KANW in Albuquerque, N.M.; KUNC in Greeley, Colo.; KUNR Public Radio in Reno, Nev.; Nevada Public Radio and Wyoming Public Media. NPR and nearly a dozen more stations are also affiliated with the partnership, according to a news release. CPR is an “associate partner.”

The newsroom brings together public radio stations reporting on issues important to the region such as public lands, rural economies, Indigenous affairs, and water and energy, the release said. It allows them to share reporting and editing resources and coordinate coverage.

The news stories are available online, including on CPR’s website.

“In an era of tightening resources, crossing state lines to collaborate is essential for sustaining strong, community-focused journalism,” said CPR CEO Stewart Vanderwilt in the release. “By joining the Mountain West News Bureau, CPR is investing in shared editorial strength and ensuring that critical stories from our communities are told with depth and context. This model helps fulfill our responsibility to serve Colorado and contribute meaningfully to journalism across the region.”
