CPB to award $12M in interconnection funds to stations

A sign for CPB

CPB plans to distribute more than $12 million in interconnection money directly to stations, according to a system message from CEO Patricia Harrison.

Public Media Infrastructure is already expected to receive $47 million for public radio distribution. CPB is also funding NPR’s Public Radio Satellite System with nearly $36 million after settling a legal dispute with the network.

In her message, Harrison noted CPB’s “substantial” investments in interconnection at the national level.

“This final interconnection allocation builds on that foundation by giving stations the flexibility to invest directly in the technologies, services, and partnerships that best meet their local needs and evolving audience expectations,” Harrison wrote.

Court filings earlier this month show that CPB is expected to dissolve this month after last year’s rescission of federal funding. In her message, Harrison did not say which stations would receive the $12 million in interconnection funding.

“PMI, NPR, PBS and other system partners stand ready to serve together as thought partners as stations consider how to invest in distribution, technology, and service to their communities,” Harrison wrote. “Additional information on grant awards and the distribution process will follow shortly.”

In an email from PRX Station Services, PMI Interim Executive Director Bob Kempf said CPB’s funding of PMI allows it to provide tools and services enabling distribution of podcasts, radio programs and live internet-based audio. PRX is a partner in PMI.

“Today’s direct infusion of capital across the system is an important complement to PMI’s efforts,” Kempf said. “As we chart a path for continued sustainability, robust, modern infrastructure is critical to ensuring we serve our communities into the future.”
