Shumate is leaving the dual licensee “to pursue her other passion of leadership development,” according to a news release. The news release said she will continue to teach at the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, which owns the station.

“Under her leadership, Houston Public Media has upgraded its technical infrastructure to meet future standards, expanded local and digital content, grew sponsorships, major donor and individual contributions and increased audiences on web and social platforms,” said Raymond Bartlett, SVP of administration and finance for the university, in the release. “As Lisa begins her next chapter, we’re grateful she will remain in her current role at Houston Public Media until a successor is named.”

Shumate was the first GM to lead the merged PBS and NPR stations when she joined HPM in 2011. She has been a member of the boards of both PBS and the PBS Foundation and was also chair of American Public Television and chair of the Public Television Major Market Group.

Before joining HPM, Shumate was director of programming and marketing for KHOU, Houston’s CBS affiliate. She also held various positions at Houston’s ABC affiliate.

A committee is being formed to oversee the search for Shumate’s successor.
