Bierman’s last day with the Research Triangle Park station will be in mid-March; he joins the museum in April. PBS North Carolina will work with the University of North Carolina System, which licenses the statewide network, to select an interim CEO in the coming weeks.

“Over the course of this unending pandemic we’ve all had the chance to reflect on what matters most to us. I’m an only child who lives over 2,500 miles away from my 80-something parents in Southern California — living in the same time zone will make it much easier to spend more precious time with them,” Bierman said in a staff memo Wednesday. “The sweetness of proximity to my parents is tinged with more than a bit of sadness. PBS NC is an incredible place. I’m sad to leave it because I’ve truly loved working with you, and am incredibly proud of all we’ve accomplished together.”

Bierman joined PBS North Carolina in 2019 after serving as chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Before that, he was editor-in-chief of Time Inc.’s Southern Living.
