The founder of the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism is gearing up to launch a new online nonprofit news outlet focused on statehouse and investigative reporting in New Hampshire.
A website is already operating with an “under construction notice.” The completed InDepthNH.org is scheduled to go live Sept. 1, according to founder Nancy West.
Prior to launching the site, West investigated police dishonesty in criminal cases across the country that were later overturned. The Fund for Investigative Journalism funded the investigation, and the story appeared on VTDigger.org, a Vermont-based nonprofit investigative news outlet.
West told the Institute for Nonprofit News that she worked for the New Hampshire Union Leader for 30 years until her position was eliminated. Cuts at newspapers have created opportunities, West said, while those in power have taken to “orchestrating the news via press release.”
“It is shocking today in New Hampshire how rarely the powerful are held accountable, how smug they are and how it appears at times that the truth simply no longer matters,” West said. “Luckily I have plenty of outrage left to fight back.”
