In three words: Humble, deliberate, smart
What colleagues say: David is one of the nimblest journalists I’ve ever met. He’s driven by the mission and a desire to create a more inclusive, useful resource for community members and to support a healthier information ecosystem in Los Angeles. By modeling partnerships with community, ethnic and in-language media, he has helped make the L.A. Local News Initiative partnership possible.
What David says
Decision to work in public media: I grew up as a PBS Kid. It was so important to have that resource as a child. I wanted to make a difference through public media. I have spent my journalism career in public media and nonprofit newsrooms.
Key accomplishments: Getting to work on the LAist engagement team has been such a privilege and rewarding experience. I’ve been able to build relationships and push myself to grow. I think about what we’ve done to get resources like our voter guides and zines about career changes to people who might not have seen them, and about translating some of our news stories for Spanish-speaking residents. As a former intern turned staff, I also consider leading the internship program a key accomplishment.
Inspired by: Making information and resources accessible for communities that might not know about them and then hearing direct feedback about their impact. And by supporting the next generation of journalists through mentoring people who are starting out or making career changes.
Advice for young public media professionals: Your network is so important — to help navigate your career steps and to have, and provide, support. Find those communities through local journalism chapters of national organizations, colleagues or friends. Working in news can be a lot at times. Give yourself grace, take breaks when you need them and keep in touch with people.
Advice for public media leaders: Be open to trying new experiences or learning something new. It’s never too late!
