GBH receives $500K boost from the state of Massachusetts

Massachusetts has appropriated $500,000 for Boston’s GBH, an unusual move in a state that typically doesn’t provide funding for public broadcasters.
Gov. Maura Healey signed the fiscal year 2027 legislation on June 12. The act says that “not less than $500,000 shall be expended to GBH’s educational public media resources for the Commonwealth.”
The funding for GBH is among many educational projects funded by a 4% state surtax on income over $1 million. Other funding went to initiatives including state scholarships, career training and aid for rural schools.
GBH lost 8% of its annual funding last year with the rescission of federal funding. Before the rescission, GBH laid off 4% of its staff due to a budget deficit. It has since reduced staff in additional rounds of layoffs.
The station launched a $225 million fundraising campaign in October focused on supporting its documentary and kids’ programming and creating a more sustainable business model.
“We’re deeply committed to the ways that we bridge educational gaps, spark curiosity, and build confidence in learners of all ages, everywhere,” a GBH spokesperson said.
