The 2026 BPM Trailblazer Retrospective will stream nine of their films for free, April 27 – May 10, during BPM’s 2026 PitchBLACK season.
Since 2021, Black Public Media has presented a Trailblazer Award during its annual PitchBLACK Forum & Awards event. This year’s recipients are the dynamic Firelight Media founders Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith. In celebration of their spectacular body of work, BPM is presenting a two-week, online retrospective of their films, Mon., April 27 – Sun., May 10. Nelson and Smith will accept their awards during the PitchBLACK Awards, April 30 at The Apollo Stages at the Victoria in Harlem.

“Stanley and Marcia’s peerless partnership in the public media space has transformed this industry for the better,” says Leslie Fields-Cruz, executive director of Black Public Media. “Black Public Media is thrilled to bestow our highest award on these two independent media titans.” The BPM Trailblazer Award is presented to prolific media makers who’ve produced an exceptional body of work and have a strong history of mentoring other makers. Past recipients include Michèle Stephenson and Joe Brewster (2019), Marco Williams (2021), Orlando Bagwell (2022), Yoruba Richen (2023), Sam Pollard (2024) and Lillian E. Benson (2025).
Setting a high bar
Nelson is perhaps the foremost chronicler of the African American experience working in nonfiction film today. His documentaries, many of which have aired on PBS, combine compelling narratives with rich and rigorously researched historical detail. The MacArthur “Genius” Fellow was awarded a Peabody for his body of work in 2016. Other honors include the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), the National Medal in the Humanities (2013) and being named among BPM’s 40 for 40 Game Changers (2020).
Smith has written several films alongside Nelson, including Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities, Through the Fire: The Legacy of Barack Obama, Freedom Riders, and The Murder of Emmett Till. Her accolades include a Primetime Emmy nomination (2003), Best Nonfiction Writing award from the Writers’ Guild Award (for the Emmett Till film), a Muse Award from New York Women in Film & Television (2013), Black Star Film Festival’s Luminary Award (2019) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from DOC NYC (2024).
Nelson and Smith launched Firelight Media in 2000. Over the years, the organization has helped dozens of underrepresented filmmakers bring their cinematic dreams to life. In 2025, Smith resigned from her post as president of Firelight, passing the torch to documentary filmmaker and former senior VP of programs, Loira Limbal.
“Not only has Marcia and Stanley’s prolific body of work set superior standards for the field and blessed the world with a plethora of important African American stories, their dedication to creating new opportunities for other underrepresented and underserved media makers has made it possible for the industry to grow in ways that better reflect its increasingly diverse audiences,” says Fields-Cruz.
