Community Radio for Northern Colorado reduces staffing by 20%

The parent organization of KUNC in Greeley, Colo., and The Colorado Sound music service has eliminated eight jobs.
Community Radio for Northern Colorado’s layoffs affect every department and amount to a reduction of more than 20% of its 38 employees, according to a news release.
The organization announced the restructuring Tuesday in response to “financial challenges.” In an email Wednesday, CEO Tammy Terwelp said two additional staffers will be laid off next year.

“Like many media organizations, especially non-profit, we are navigating an increasingly challenging funding environment,” Terwelp said in the release.
“This was a very difficult decision, and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all our employees for their dedication and commitment to our mission,” Terwelp said. “Every member of our team, past and present, has contributed to the strength of KUNC and The Colorado Sound.”
With the departures of two employees in 2026, the full impact of the workforce reduction will be the elimination of 26% of jobs at the organization.
Leadership also plans to look for new funding strategies and partnerships, the release said.
KUNC’s CPB Community Service Grant was $336,503 in 2024, according to CPB’s website, making up about 5% of its revenue. In FY24, the station had a deficit of about $357,170, according to its IRS 990 filing.
Public media organizations across the country have imposed layoffs since July, when Congress voted to claw back nearly $1.1 billion in forward-funded appropriations for fiscal years 2026 and 2027.
