Stokes was appointed the station’s leader in 2013 after working as executive director of Friends of KSPS, which owns the station and is its fundraising arm. His last day with the station will be Dec. 31.

“It’s been an incredible run,” Stokes said in a Friday news release. “More than anything, the best part of my time here has been the chance to work alongside such a talented and committed team. It’s been an honor and a privilege.”

During his tenure, Stokes helped establish the station’s education department, which led local initiatives and events like FitKids Day and Future Day. Stokes also oversaw the growth of music programs like Inland Sessions and led the creation of Civics Bowl, which he also hosted.

Stokes previously worked for Alabama Public Television from 2006–11, first as assistant VP of development and later as VP of development. He has also been news director for NBC affiliate WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Va, and president and GM of WVTM 13 in Birmingham, Ala.

The board of directors for Friends of KSPS is developing a plan to appoint an interim GM who will work with Stokes. The station has also begun the search for its next permanent leader.
