Louisville Public Media has named Kenya Young its next president and CEO.

Young, who will begin May 19, joins LPM after former CEO and President Stephen George left the organization to join the American Journalism Project in January as head of emerging markets.
Young is currently a senior VP at New York Public Radio, where she oversees a portfolio of national radio shows, podcasts, broadcast operations, live events and audience development, a news release said.
She previously spent 15 years at NPR, including as the newsroom’s managing editor and EP of Morning Edition and Up First.
“At a time when trusted local media is more essential than ever, I’m committed to ensuring LPM fulfills its mission to provide independent and courageous news, music, and experiences that serve the needs and aspirations of Louisville’s multifaceted communities,” Young said in the release. “Louisville is a vibrant, culturally rich community, and by deepening connections across all neighborhoods and embracing bold innovation, we’ll ensure more people in our community are seen and heard, and feel connected.”
Young takes the helm after LPM offered voluntary staff buyouts, according to an internal email last month from interim CEO Gabrielle Jones that was obtained by Current.
“Like many nonprofits and public media stations in particular, we are navigating a challenging financial period due to today’s political and philanthropic landscape,” she wrote.
Abby Shue, chair of the LPM Board of Directors, praised Young in the release.
“Her dynamic energy, expertise in content creation, audience development, and fundraising, coupled with her proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams, make her the perfect fit for this role,” Shue said. “We are confident that Kenya will collaborate with LPM’s exceptional staff to drive continued innovation and lasting impact for one of Louisville’s most important community assets.”
