  • WBGO staffers form union

    A group of staffers at WBGO in Newark, N.J., have formed a bargaining unit following a card check agreement between management and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.  A third-party mediator counted the cards, which were collected in September from staff who support the union. The employees needed a simple majority to form the union.

  • Sahan Journal wins 2020 Local that Works contest

    A nonprofit newsroom that covers immigrant and refugee communities in Minnesota was chosen Thursday as the winner of Current’s annual Local that Works contest. Sahan Journal, which was relaunched in 2019, received a $20,000 grand prize provided by the Wyncote Foundation.  “This really shows the work of our reporters,” said Mukhtar Ibrahim, founding executive director and editor of Sahan Journal, upon receiving the prize.

  • Donald Boswell announces plans to leave WNED/WBFO

    Donald K. Boswell will retire next June as president and CEO of Buffalo Toronto Public Media, which operates WNED-TV/FM and WBFO-FM in Buffalo, N.Y. Boswell Boswell has led WNED, a joint licensee that provides PBS, NPR and classical music to Western New York state and Southern Ontario, since 1998. In 2012, WNED acquired WBFO, an NPR News station in Buffalo.
