  • WFAE union recognized by management

    Content staffers at WFAE in Charlotte, N.C., formed a union Thursday following voluntary recognition by management, organizers announced. The recognition follows a card check Thursday to verify that more than 70% of the content employees signed union authorization cards.  “We are looking forward to working with WFAE management to build a fair contract,” the union staff said on Twitter.

  • Survey finds noncommercial radio stations outpace commercial counterparts in newsroom diversity

    A survey tracking workforce diversity in radio and television found that racial diversity has grown among the news staffs of noncommercial radio stations.  The RTDNA/Newhouse School at Syracuse University Survey, conducted during the fourth quarter of 2021, found that workforces in TV and radio newsrooms are overall becoming more racially diverse. But they're not keeping up with racial demographics in the U.S.  The survey of radio stations found that white employees made up 75.4% of the workforce in noncommercial newsrooms. That was down from 78.8% in the fourth quarter of 2020.

  • Nikki Swarn appointed KUVO GM

    Nikki Swarn will lead Rocky Mountain Public Media’s jazz station KUVO as GM, the organization announced Tuesday.  Swarn Swarn launched the organization’s The Drop, an Urban Alternative station, in 2019. She will now serve as GM of both stations.  “Together in concert, both stations remain committed to developing and delivering content that explores and shares community voices and perspectives by providing platforms for access and authenticity,” Swarn said in a press release.
