    New Hampshire Public Radio has voluntarily recognized a union made up of content staffers. The decision came after a neutral third party certified that a majority of the bargaining unit wanted to unionize, said CEO Jim Schachter in an email to staff Tuesday.

  • Gene Purcell, Wisconsin Public Media director, dies at 61

    Gene Purcell, director of Wisconsin Public Media, died Saturday from injuries sustained in a traffic crash last week. He was 61.  Purcell A longtime public broadcaster, Purcell spent more than a decade leading the organizations that manage and maintain Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin’s statewide network of radio and television stations.  “Gene led a reinvention of Wisconsin Public Media that continues to expand and improve our service to audiences and Wisconsin schools,” PBS Wisconsin Director of Television Jon Miskowski said in a news release.

  • Minnesota’s Northern Community Radio hires David Baes as executive director

    Montgomery and Baes David Baes was hired as executive director at Northern Community Radio in northern Minnesota, the NPR affiliate announced Tuesday.  The organization operates KAXE in Grand Rapids and KBXE in Bemidji.  Baes has had a 35-year career in radio and public media, most recently serving as GM at Pacifica station KPFT in Houston.  At KAXE, Baes replaces longtime GM Maggie Montgomery, who retired. Baes and Montgomery were able to work together to “cement the institutional knowledge and history” of the organization, according to a press release.  “David is a friendly, confident person with new ideas for Northern Community Radio,” Montgomery said in the release.
