Sally Kane, CEO of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, will step down after leading the organization for nearly 10 years.

She will continue in the role until NFCB’s board selects her replacement, she told Current in an email. She expects to remain in the role until at least late fall.

Kane began leading the national organization dedicated to community broadcasters in 2014. She is now “looking to do something different,” she said.

“I have nothing earth shattering to announce about what comes next for me,” she wrote to NFCB’s email forum. “I simply found myself yearning to try something different – that was my form of reckoning. It would not be possible for me to feel this certain without knowing that NFCB is in such good hands and it’s on solid ground – both financially and in terms of the valuable service we are providing.”

“Sally Kane has worked diligently to position this organization to be a thought leader and an impactful presence in public media circles,” said Kerry Semrad, chair of NFCB’s board and GM of KZUM in Lincoln, Neb., in a press release. “We are thrilled to see her embrace new opportunities while handing off an organization that is spinning like a top and ready to rise to the changing world our industry is navigating.”

Prior to leading NFCB, Kane was executive director of KVNF in Paonia, Colo.

“A trained facilitator, accomplished fundraiser, and impassioned public speaker, she led NFCB through a comprehensive restructure, grew its membership, stabilized its finances, and launched a host of new services,” the release said. “She has been a lifelong advocate for serving the information needs of rural and minority communities on the local, state and national levels.”

NFCB, which represents 200 member stations, will open the application window for its new CEO July 10.
