Houston Public Media has received a commitment for an $8 million planned gift from an anonymous couple, which will be the largest donation in the station’s history.
The funds will support the station’s radio and TV news reporting and programming, according to a Monday press release. The donors have not restricted use of the funds, according to a spokesperson.
“The couple grew up with public radio and television and know the impact it makes on rural and urban communities,” said HPM GM Lisa Shumate in the release. “They are longtime supporters of NPR and PBS and their gift will support Houston Public Media’s emphasis on advancing free speech, educating the community and ensuring fair, unbiased news.”
The gift was made as part of a larger fundraising campaign by the University of Houston System, the station’s licensee, that raised $1.2 billion.
