Nevada Public Radio in Las Vegas is filling its new FM signal in Reno with a music discovery format.
The station announced earlier this month that NV89 will air “emerging artists and Nevada musicians who will be the stars of tomorrow,” according to a press release. It also features World Cafe and the Nevada Public Radio news show State of Nevada.
Nevada Public Radio expanded its reach to Reno in November with a $550,000 purchase of 89.1 FM from Open Sky Radio Corporation. The creation of the new music format “speaks to our mission of supporting the cultural life of the communities we serve,” said Nevada Public Radio President Flo Rogers in the release.
The new station’s format will not compete with public radio stations already broadcasting in Reno. KUNR, licensed to the University of Nevada, Reno, and KKTO, a repeater operated by Capital Public Radio in Sacramento, Calif., both air mostly news and some music.
