Minnesota Public Radio and the Mayo Clinic are promoting health and healing through a unique partnership that launched Thursday.

Research has shown that the benefits of listening to music include improved pain control and lowered anxiety and blood pressure. So MPR will curate a playlist of classical compositions for the listening pleasure of patients at Mayo Clinic hospitals in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.

“Our mission at MPR is to enrich the mind and nourish the spirit, enhancing the lives of our audiences,” Brian Newhouse, managing director of classical programming at for MPR and American Public Media, said in a statement. “Curating gorgeous music for the benefit of medical patients, in collaboration with such an esteemed institution like Mayo Clinic, delivers on that mission in a whole new way for MPR and is a joy to do.”

The music will feature selections from the “Relax Stream” on APM’s YourClassical.org. Compositions by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and others will air on Mayo’s video-on-demand TV service and will also be available on Mayo’s TV Humanities Channel, which airs concerts, theater and lectures from Rochester, Minn.

The audio will contain underwriting and sponsorship acknowledgments but no fundraising or promotional messages, according to the clinic.
