A new reporting collaboration among public radio outlets in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia will focus on issues affecting the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

“Chesapeake Bay issues are too critical and the area is too large for one station or even two to cover,” said Joel McCord, news director at WYPR in Baltimore, in a press release. “This partnership is about getting important information to a population of more than 10 million people.”

The goal of the Chesapeake Journalism Collaboration is to produce in-depth reporting among the five partners: WYPR; WESM in Princess Anne, Md.; Delaware Public Media in Dover; Virginia Public Radio; and Delmarva Public Radio in Salisbury, Md. WYPR’s McCord will serve as lead editor.

The first report, focusing on an invasive catfish in the Bay, will air Monday. The stations will produce 20 stories together over the next year.

Funding for the collaboration will come from the participating stations and several foundations and major donors.
