Pubmedia win several awards at AAJA convention

Pubmedia producers won awards in several categories at the Asian-American Journalists Association’s national convention this month in Las Vegas.

In the category Asian American Pacific Islander Issues, Masahiro Sugano, Carmen L. Vicencio and Simon Kilmurry of American Documentary, Inc. and Christopher Hastings with the World channel won in Television/Online. “America Reframed: Cambodian Son” follows a year in the life of a poet who escaped war-torn Cambodia for the U.S. at the age of two and was deported after serving a 14-year prison term for attempted murder. The America Reframed airs on public television’s World channel.

Independent journalist Heidi Shin took home the award in Radio/Audio for “Why Young North Koreans are Daring to Wear Skinny Jeans”, a practice illegal in the country. The story aired on PRI’s The World.

The General Excellence award in Radio/Audio went to producers Hitesh Hathi, Meghna Chakrabarti, James Bologna and Alison Bruzek from WBUR in Boston for “Evictions In East Boston: The Push For A ‘Just Cause’ Ordinance,” a four-part series about the city’s housing crisis.
