The Washington Post and APM Reports, American Public Media’s investigative and documentary unit, are seeking to highlight objects that tell personal stories about black history in the U.S.

Submissions will be considered for Historically Black, an eight-episode weekly podcast set to launch Sept. 19. The effort extends the Post’s Historically Black Tumblr, a crowdsourced “people’s museum” that showcases images of objects, photographs, songs and stories.

The idea originated at the Post, which reached out to APM to launch a podcast to coincide with the Sept. 24 opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

The podcast, which will feature guest celebrity hosts, will highlight personal objects and consider how they contribute to understanding black history and culture.

Entries are due by noon Eastern time Sept. 1. More information about the episodes and guest hosts will be announced within a few weeks, a publicist said.
