David Kurzer, an accountant at WNET/WLIW in New York City, died June 13 after a five-year battle with lymphoma. He was 57.

Margaret Bilardello, volunteer coordinator at WLIW, remembers how Kurzer gave so much of his time for public broadcasting. “He helped me over and over again, volunteering for long auction nights, pledge nights and special events,” she told Current. “He was just a good guy with a good heart.”

Also, his wit “was amazing,” she said. “He was completely spontaneous—not trying to be funny, he could produce a quip that was so spot-on and hysterical.”

Kurzer came to WLIW more than 10 years ago as a volunteer in the station’s auction department and was soon hired to supervise auction telemarketers. Following the station’s merger with WNET in July 2001, he moved to WNET accounts payable and rose from clerk to supervisor.

He was born in 1952 in Winnipeg, Canada, to parents Eve and Leible Kurzer. Soon after the family returned to the United States, where he grew up.

Kurzer received an accounting degree from American University in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his station volunteer work, he was active with the Friends of the Arts in Oyster Bay, N.Y., a nonprofit  presenting artistic programs “for the education, enrichment and enjoyment of the diverse Long Island community,” according to its website.

He is survived by his mother in Florida.

A graveside service was held June 16 at Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Survivors suggested that memorial donations be given to Friends of the Arts or the donor’s local public broadcasting station or charity.
