NETA Awards for 2008, presented January 2009
OETA and WETA take top honors
at annual NETA awards luncheon
Two projects received special honors as 2008's "Best of the Best" at the National Educational Telecommunications Association's awards ceremony Jan. 15. They were presented at a luncheon at NETA's annual conference, held this year in Tampa, Fla.
"Best of the Best" honors are presented at the judges' discretion and "only in extraordinary cases," according to NETA.
The Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) in Oklahoma City was one of those top honorees in the category of program production for its Gallery: The People’s Art. WETA in Washington, D.C., also was honored for its outreach on The War.
OETA also was the big winner during the luncheon presentation, walking away with four hand-engraved trophies. The Arkansas Educational Television Network scored three.
Here are the rest of the 23 member winners who took home a total of 39 trophies:
Instructional media: The Wisconsin Educational Communications Board received two awards for Madison: Into the Book, for both instructional media product/large market and teacher resource/large market.
Also winning in this category: KERA in Dallas, Little Bites, Big Steps (in-service/large market); Western Reserve Public Media in Alliance and Kent, Ohio, Big or Small: Measure It All (instructional media product/small market); Thirteen/WNET in New York, What’s Up In Finance? (ITV program/large market); and WLVT in Bethlehem, Pa., Pennsylvania Career Gates (ITV series/small market).
Promotion: Stations in Nashville, Tenn., and Lincoln, Neb., each garnered two awards. Nashville Public Television won for Help Us Help Others (corporate institutional/small market) and Joy of Painting (single video/small market), and Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) for Inspire Nebraska (corporate institutional/large market) and Crane Song (national promotion/large market).
Also winning: WMHT in Troy, N.Y., New York Now (local campaign/small market); AETN, In Their Words (local campaign/large market); OETA, Odyssey Program Guide (print design/large market); WLVT, PBS39 Annual Report (print design/small market); KCPT in Kansas City, Mo., Eat Small (single video/large market); KSPS in Spokane, Wash., Antiques Roadshow Spokane (special event/small market); Wisconsin Public Television in Madison, Quilt Expo (special event/large market).
Winning in the outreach category: Utah Education Network in Salt Lake City, Water Wise Utah (community impact/large market); AETN, In Their Words (national campaign/large market); WSRE in Pensacola, Fla., Gulf Coast War Memories (national campaign/small market); KCPT, Generation XL (local campaign/large market); KUAC in Fairbanks, Alaska, International Polar Year Segments (local campaign/small market); WETA, The War (website/large market).
Program production: OETA won two of its total four awards in this category, for Oklahoma Centennial Spectacular (performance/large market) and Gallery: The People’s Art (information/large market).
In a tie, judges chose Idaho Public Television in Boise for Barbara Morgan: No Limits and Kentucky Educational Television in Lexington for Lincoln: I, Too, Am A Kentuckian for the biography/large market award.
Also winning: MontanaPBS in Bozeman, 11th & Grant with Eric Funk (performance/small market); AETN, Delta Dreams (news and public affairs/large market); WMHT, New York Now (news and public affairs/small market); KSPS, Secret Mission: Hanford (historical documentary/small market); WLRN in Miami, Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami (historical documentary/large market); WCTE in Cookeville,Tenn., Crank: Darkness on the Edge of Town (information/small market); Nashville Public Television, Beautiful Tennessee: Our Scenic Waterways (science and nature/small market); NET, The Price of Water (science and nature/large market); Basin PBS in Midland, Texas, Quiz Show (series/small market); Thirteen/WNET, Exposé: America’s Investigative Reports (series/large market).
